The Javanese Lulur Ritual: From Royal Tradition to the Pages of Vogue

Six steps of massage, exfoliation, purification and nourishment that turn body care into ceremony.

“There are, quite simply, two types of women in the world: those who have experienced a Javanese Lulur body treatment and those who have not.”

That was how Vogue introduced readers to the Javanese Lulur ritual, an experience the magazine praised for leaving the mind eased, the shoulders relaxed and the skin extraordinarily soft.

Historically associated with Javanese royalty, the Javanese Lulur ritual was traditionally performed every day for 40 days before a princess’s wedding. It was a period of physical preparation and intentional care, treating the body through massage, aromatic ingredients, flowers, water and traditional Indonesian wellness practices.

When JAMU launched in the United States at the W Hotel in New York City, in 1998, the Javanese Lulur ritual became its signature treatment. Its arrival introduced spa guests to a complete experience that brought Indonesian bodywork and beauty traditions to the western world.

The Six Steps of the Javanese Lulur Ritual

1. Balinese Massage

The experience begins with Balinese massage, preparing the body through rhythmic touch and movement. The unique massage, based on Chinese, Indian & European techniques helps to ease muscular tension, encourage circulation, and invite the guest to settle fully into the ritual.

As Kim Collier shared in the original Vogue coverage “massage is deeply woven into Balinese life, where touch, community and a powerful connection with nature are closely intertwined.”

2. Full-Body Exfoliation With Lulur Powder

Next, the body is covered in Lulur powder, hand-made blend of  rice, coconut, turmeric and jasmine flowers.

The aromatic preparation is worked gently across the skin and allowed to dry. It is then carefully rubbed away, lifting dull surface skin and polishing the body. Turmeric gives the blend its rich golden color, while rice and coconut support the exfoliating experience and jasmine adds its unmistakable floral aroma.

The process feels earthy, tactile and deeply connected to the natural ingredients at the center of Indonesian beauty traditions.

3. Cooling Yogurt Application

Once the Lulur powder has been removed, cool yogurt is smoothed over the body.

The yogurt takes the place of soap and helps activate the exfoliation process through its naturally occurring enzymes and cultures. It also cools and comforts the freshly polished skin.

Vogue called this “perhaps the most delightful stage,” describing how the fresh yogurt is splashed and smoothed across the body before being rinsed away.

4. Flower Bath or ‘Melukat’ Rinse

Sacred Soak Ritual.

The yogurt and remaining Lulur preparation are removed with a sacred flower bath or Melukat-inspired rinse using water and fresh flowers.

On a physical level, the water cleanses the skin. Symbolically, this step represents purification, helping clear the body’s energy and creating space for renewal with floral energy. It transforms rinsing from a practical part of the treatment into a meaningful moment of peaceful release.

5. Jasmine Frangipani Body Oil

After bathing, Jasmine Frangipani body oil is applied across the freshly exfoliated skin.

The aromatic oil replenishes moisture, softens the body and extends the sensory experience of the ritual. Its floral fragrance brings together the jasmine used in the Lulur powder and the fresh flowers used during purification, leaving the skin nourished and delicately scented.

6. A Traditional JAMU Beverage

The experience concludes with a warm JAMU beverage infused with ginger and turmeric.

This final step brings the ritual inward, honoring Indonesia’s traditional herbal beverage culture and the holistic understanding that wellness involves both the inside and outside of the body. Warming, earthy and restorative, the drink offers a quiet transition back into the world while stimulating digestive fire or “agni”.

A Complete Ritual for Body and Spirit

The Javanese Lulur ritual does more than soften and polish the skin. Across six thoughtful steps, it moves through touch and oral tradition. The Lulur is given to the bride to be by women in the family, during which time stories and love are shared with her, for 40- days, every day, before the wedding. What is not mentioned here is the V-Steam, more on that later…

Javanese Lulur celebrated appearance in Vogue remains a treasured part of JAMU’s history, and the deeper story lives in the ritual itself. The ingredients, techniques and symbolism reflect an approach to wellness in which caring for the body is never merely maintenance. It is ceremony, connection and a form of renewal that can be felt within and without.
