The JAMU Guide to Self-Massage
An invitation to notice what your body has been telling you, then reconnect through water, breath, movement, intentional touch and the nourishing power of plant oils.
By the middle of the week, your body has usually collected more information than you’ve given yourself time to notice. Maybe your shoulders have crept a little closer to your ears or your jaw has been doing more work than necessary. Your breathing may have gotten shallower somewhere between Monday morning and Tuesday afternoon, and you’ve been moving through showers, skincare and getting dressed without really registering any of it.
This is officially your invitation to check in.
And no, it doesn’t require another appointment on your calendar or an elaborate wellness routine. We encourage you to take just a few extra minutes with your own body, using things already available to you: water, breath, movement, touch and plant oils.
At JAMU, body care has always been about more than what we apply to the skin. Inspired by Indonesian wellness traditions, it is also about how we interact with the body and the small practices that help us reconnect with it. Self-massage is one of the simplest places to begin.
Start in the Shower
Before you reach for an oil, start with water.
As you cleanse, bring a little more awareness to what your body might need that day. Take a deeper breath. Roll your shoulders. Stretch your arms overhead. Tap gently along your arms, legs and torso to wake things up.
Sound can be part of the practice, too. Humming, singing or chanting encourages you to use your breath differently while creating gentle vibration through the body. It may feel playful, meditative or simply good after a long few days.
Finish your shower with a cool rinse for an invigorating change in temperature before stepping out.
Reach for Plant Oils While Skin Is Still Warm
After your shower, your skin is warm and your body has already had a few minutes to shift out of autopilot. This is an ideal moment to introduce a nourishing plant oil and continue that attention through touch.
Rather than quickly smoothing it on and moving to the next thing, use the application as your self-massage. Notice the texture and aroma of the oil, work slowly enough to feel what your hands are doing and adjust the pressure based on what feels good.
There is no perfect technique to master here. The point is to pay attention.
Work Toward the Heart
Use long, invigorating strokes along the arms and legs, generally moving inward toward the heart. Let the movement have some rhythm to it, especially in areas that feel tired or stagnant.
You might notice that one shoulder needs more attention than the other, that your calves are sore or that an area you hadn’t thought about all week feels surprisingly tense. Follow those cues. Self-massage gives you a chance to respond to the body you’re actually in that day rather than moving through a prescribed routine.
Slow Down at the Abdomen
When you reach your center, change the pace.
Using comfortable pressure, massage the abdomen in slow, clockwise circles, following the natural direction of the digestive tract. Keep your breathing easy and allow the belly to soften beneath your hands.
It is a small gesture, but one that can feel especially grounding in the middle of a busy week when so much of our attention tends to live everywhere except within ourselves.
Finish With a Forward Fold
Once you’ve worked the oil across your body, finish with a little movement.
Ease into a comfortable forward bend, softening the knees as much as you need. Let your head relax and take a few breaths here. You can use the position to bring any remaining oil around the lower back and other areas that are comfortable to reach.
When you’re ready to come back up, place your hands on your thighs for support and slowly roll to standing. Bring your hands together at your heart and take one final moment before moving on.
Notice what has changed.
Maybe you feel more awake. Maybe you feel calmer. Maybe you simply realized how tight your shoulders were. That counts, too.
Make the Check-In Yours
The beauty of self-massage is that it can meet you wherever you are. You might spend fifteen minutes moving through the entire practice one morning and two minutes applying oil with more intention the next.
The goal isn’t to turn Wednesday into another day filled with things you should be doing for yourself. It’s to interrupt the momentum of the week long enough to ask a much simpler question: How does my body actually feel today?
Then give yourself a few minutes to listen.
